Finish status: DNS, DNF, and classified

Official F1 results use several finish labels. Let's start with some definitions:

DNS β€” Did Not Start
The driver did not start that session (no racing laps). Fantasy scoring usually treats this like a retirement for DNS/DNF penalties (points depend on your schema).

DNF β€” Did Not Finish
The driver started but did not complete the session (e.g. Retired). They may still have a position number but did not take the chequered flag on track.

Classified
Counted in the official results for that session β€” Finished, Lapped, or several laps down, as long as they meet the FIA minimum distance (below).

Not classified
Started but completed too few laps to count officially β€” different from a normal DNF. May trigger a Not Classified penalty in fantasy (schema-dependent).

The 90% rule (FIA)

For both the main race and sprint race, the FIA only classifies drivers who complete at least 90% of the winner’s laps, rounded down to a whole number of laps.

Example: in a 23-lap sprint, 90% of 23 = 20.7 β†’ round down β†’ minimum 20 laps. So a driver finishing 20 laps is classified, but one completing 19 or fewer β†’ not classified

A driver can pit for a long time, rejoin, and still be not classified if they are below that minimum. Another driver can be many laps behind but classified if they still hit the minimum (e.g. 74 laps when the winner did 82).

How these apply on Formula Matchup

  • Position points β€” Usually from official finishing position when classified.
  • Not Classified penalty β€” Fewer laps than floor(90% Γ— winner laps), and not retired/DQ for that session.
  • DNS/DNF penalty β€” Did not start or Retired before completing 90% of the winner's completed laps.
  • Disqualified penalty β€” When a driver is DQ'd from a session, they receive the DQ penalty and no other points from that session, no positioned gained, no .
  • Positions gained β€” +1 point per position improved from a driver’s starting grid to their finishing position, but only for drivers who count as finishers in our scoring (Finished or Lapped). Retirements, non-starts, disqualifications, and not-classified results do not earn this bonus.
