Formula Matchup Player Guide 2025

Everything you need to know to become a Formula Matchup champion

Getting Started

Formula Matchup Account

Any new prospective player will begin by clicking Sign Up to create an account at formulamatchup.com. On return visits, players will Log In with their existing account information to access the game. Once your account has been created, you will either create a new league or join an existing league.

How to Create a League

  1. Create Account or Log In with your existing account
  2. A player (League Director) clicks "Start a League" in dropdown under username
  3. Give your league a name
  4. Share the Join Code with other people to gather participants
Please note, league sizes must be either 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 participants
  5. The League Info page will display a list of all participants who have joined. Once this list is complete according to the League Director…
  6. The League Director clicks "Lock In League" and will be prompted to set the Schedule Structure. (see below)

Note: You may join Formula Matchup and start playing at any time. If your league is a bit late to the grid, you'll start playing and scoring points during the next scheduled Grand Prix weekend.

How to Join a League

  1. Create Account or Log In with your existing account
  2. Click "Join a League", enter the Join Code shared with you by your League Director
  3. Choose your team name & team members. (Team names and members are changeable an unlimited amount of times up until your league's first race deadline.) Stay within the 100 million dollar budget!
  4. Your name is added to growing list of people who have joined the league shown on the League Info page
  5. Wait until all participants have joined and your League Director locks in your league and sets the schedule structure.

How to Set your Schedule Structure (League Directors Only)

Step 1: Choose Number of Teams you have already gathered in your league

Step 2: Choose Style of Playoffs (see Playoffs section below for specific details)

  • None: Head-to-head matchups continue for all race weekends until the end of the season
  • Pairs Playoff: Matchups determined by pairing neighbors in the standings. (1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, etc.)
  • Bracket Playoff: Traditional single elimination bracket style (ex: 1st vs. 4th, winner advances)

Step 3: Head to Head Schedule Generated

Playoffs

Playoffs are optional. However, if your League Director set up your league to include playoffs, please note that NO CHIPS may be used in the playoffs. If you fail to use one of your chips during the regular season, it will be lost and gone forever. There are two options for holding playoffs…

Pairs Playoff

Playoff matchups are determined by pairing neighbors in the standings. (1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, etc.) This gives the opportunity for teams to gain positions on players closest to them while still maintaining general overall position in the standings. For example, someone in 6th or below is unlikely to win the whole league in this method, but someone in 2nd or 3rd might have that chance.

Bracket Playoff

Traditional single elimination bracket style. (Ex: 1st vs. 4th, winner advances) All teams participate, though some rounds may see your team earning a bye week. Depending on the number of teams in your league, one of the following playoff scenarios will apply to your league:

  • 4 Teams: final 1 race used for playoffs, championship bracket - top 2 teams
  • 6 Teams: final 2 races used for playoffs, championship bracket - top 4 teams
  • 8 Teams: final 2 races used for playoffs, championship bracket - top 4 teams
  • 10 Teams: final 3 races used for playoffs, championship bracket - top 6 teams, top 2 get 1st round bye
  • 12 Teams: final 3 races used for playoffs, championship bracket - top 6 teams, top 2 get 1st round bye

Note: If your team has a bye week during the playoffs, you may choose to change your team to potentially build your budget and overall point total, but you won't face off against another team.

Head-To-Head Gameplay

What sets Formula Matchup apart from other fantasy racing sites, is that any player has a chance to win and climb the standings each and every race weekend. Each race, your team will battle a different opponent's team from your league. The team that scores the most points between the two earns a point in their win column, and the losing team records a loss. If the points are the same, it is considered a tie. The league standings then reflect a team's overall win percentage and record, with a team's overall points accumulated serving as a tiebreaker between teams with identical win percentages.

Check the League Schedule to see which team you will be playing against each race weekend. Due to the variation in the number of teams and races available, it is possible that you won't play every team in your league the same number of times. Also note, if a race is cancelled and not rescheduled, that week's matchup is skipped and the rest of the schedule continues as previously determined.

Managing Your Team

Team Makeup

Your team is made up of your choice of any 5 drivers and 2 constructors, staying within the 100 million dollar cost cap. You will also pick one driver in your team to receive the Turbo Driver (2x). Any driver in your lineup can be the Turbo Driver which will receive double their earned points for that Grand Prix. (The DRS Boost only applies to the selected driver, it does not affect the points scored by constructors.)

Price Updates

After a race concludes, prices for all drivers and constructors will be updated. Prices can increase or decrease depending on their performance and will remain fixed until the next Grand Prix. This will also result in a player's budget increasing or decreasing based on the drivers and constructors they have.

Transfers

Fine-tune your lineup for each race with transfers! You have 2 free transfers ahead of every race for your team. If you make more than the 2 transfers, each additional transfer will incur a 10 point penalty for your team. (Changing your Turbo Driver (2x) Driver doesn't count as a transfer.)

1 unused free transfer will carry over to the next race. New teams may continue to make unlimited transfers before the first team lock deadline.

Chips

Racing teams constantly bring upgrades for their cars and chips can help power-up your team too. Each chip will suit different situations throughout the season. Whether it's helping you to make wholesale changes to your line-up or giving one driver a huge x3 score multiplier there's a chip that can help. There are six chips available but each one can only be used once during the season and you can only use one per race, so choose carefully. Once you've chosen to use one of your chips that decision is final and cannot be cancelled.

There are 6 chips available in total and you can choose from 3 of these straightaway - these are Autopilot, Extra DRS Boost and No Negative. The remaining 3 will unlock for your team's 2nd race. Each chip can only be used once during the season and you can only use one per race, so choose carefully.

Autopilot Chip

Autopilot will change the DRS Boost selection and give it to the highest scoring driver in your team, if that turns out to be different to your original choice.

Extra DRS Boost Chip

Play this chip to make a driver in your lineup a Mega Driver! They'll get a huge 3x multiplier on their score for the next Grand Prix weekend. You can select any driver in your lineup (constructors aren't eligible), but if your choice already is already the Turbo Driver you'll have to give that to another driver.

No Negative Chip

Thinking of going for a risky strategy this week? Use the No Negative chip and if any of your team members score a negative you will limit your loss at zero points for that driver or constructor. The No Negative is applied per scoring category, not just the overall total for the driver or constructor. You will still be deducted points for making more than the permitted number of free transfers.

Wildcard Chip

The Wildcard chip lets you make an unlimited number of changes to your team – staying within the cost cap, of course. The chip will remain active until the next team-lock deadline so you can come back and tinker with your line-up throughout. The Wildcard chip is not available for your first race because there is already no limit to the transfers that can be made. This chip is available after your team has completed one whole race weekend.

Limitless Chip

Limitless is like a turbocharged Wildcard. Play this chip and not only do you get unlimited transfers, you also have no cost cap for this race! Splash the cash and pick all the top drivers and teams for the next race and forget about the price tag. Your original team will be restored after the race. This chip is available after your team has completed one whole race weekend. All transfers done in the race week where the limitless chip is applied are counted as unlimited transfers under the limitless chip and no free transfers shall be carried into the next race week.

Final Fix Chip

Use the Final Fix chip and make a single change to your team between the end of Qualifying and the start of the Grand Prix. You will not incur a penalty if you've already used all of your free transfers. You will keep the points already earned by the driver you remove from your team and only score points for the incoming selection from the next track session (Race) onwards. This chip is available after your team has completed one whole race weekend. You cannot change the Turbo Driver allocation when playing your final fix chip, if the driver you remove has Turbo Driver applied then the incoming driver will be the Turbo Driver (2x) for the next session. Your original team selection will be restored following the Race, with your Final Fix driver removed from the line-up.

Important note: You have to be able to afford the driver you add to your lineup when you play the Final Fix Chip.

Scores

Please visit the Scoring page for a full breakdown. Your final score will be calculated as soon as all the data has come back from the track and scoring events (like fastest pitstops) are validated. This might be a few hours after the chequered flag has been waved.
